The Maldives is a unique and picturesque archipelago, located in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Sitting just below India and Sri Lanka, with roughly 1,200 islands making up the 26 atoll nation. Statistically speaking, the Maldives seems sparsely populated, with its 544,000 citizens scattered throughout the 185 inhabited islands.
Even though the Maldives is blessed with year round tropical temperatures, it still has two distinct seasons; the dry season, or northeast monsoon season, which runs from November to April, and the southwest monsoonal wet season which runs from May through to October. The Maldivian surf season runs from April to October, with March and November offering up quality conditions at times.
Surfing in the Maldives is an amazing experience, with a plenty of options to choose from. The water temperature remains at a constant 28°C-30°C (82 to 86 °F) all year round. When looking into surfing the Maldives, its best divided the country into three seperate locations: the north and south Malé Atolls, Central Atolls and Southern Atolls.

The Malé Atolls are by far the most accessible and affordable of the three regions. This tends to make the Malé Atolls the most popular destination for traveling surfers. The Malé Atolls, especially the northern area, has a large selection of land based camps and safari boats operating in the region. Due to this, the Malé Atolls also tend to be the most crowded of the three options. Surf breaks like Cokes, Chickens, Jails and Honky’s are very well known and considered to be more consistent than the Central and Southern Atoll regions.
Surfing in the Central Atolls hasn't been nearly as popular as the Malé Atolls, but for those wishing to escape the crowds and discover a more relaxed and uncrowded region, the Central Atolls are a great option. To fully appreciate whats on offer in the Central Atolls, its best to explore the region by safari boat. The central atolls being made up of Meemu, Dhaalu, Thaa and Laamu Atolls which offer a diverse and abundant variety of surf breaks, with plenty of options in various conditions. The Central Atolls also have some fantastic non-surfing activities, along with the customary fishing and snorkelling.
The Southern region, Huvadhoo Atolla is the most remote of the 3 regions, and requires a domestic airline flight form Malé. The souther atolls also tend to pick up more south swell than the northern regions, with breaks like Blue Bowls, Tiger Stripes, Castaways and Beacons having world class reputations. The fishing is also much better down south, so catching good sized tuna and sail fish along other pelagic species, is quite common.
